Nanowork for nanodollars

On January 20, 2009, in Nanotech, Publications, by Tim

Perhaps it’s the new economic reality, or perhaps it’s true that academics are not motivated by money, but the recent offer of a $300 nanotech encyclopedia in exchange for a 10,000 word contribution isn’t the most attractive offer I’ve seen this year.

I make that $0.03 per word which would be an insult to most jobbing wordsmiths. Smaller contributions are rewarded with a book token.

  1. That’s pretty lousy remuneration, especially as there isn’t too much kudos in being a contributor to a book – it underlines why most academics think writing book chapters is a mugs game, and only worth while when they really believe in the publication being up together.

I have btw partaken in far worse deals – sadly!

Listen to the pair of you – don’t you think the encyclopedia is a good idea? Such cynicism.
