    —————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

The presence of media was one of the requirements of the NMP.2010.1.1-1 open call “Support to dialogue and engagement for responsible social acceptance of nanotechnology”, by which the European Commission decided to fund a strong experiment of democratic and impartial dialogue on the potential benefits and risks of nanotechnology at European level.

In response to this call, Nanochannels (www.nanochannels.eu), which is entering the full phase of its media campaign as we speak, was based from the very beginning on the involvement not only of The Guardian, but also of other mainstream European daily newspapers, such as El Mundo for Spain and Il Corriere della Sera for Italy, plus Italian national radio broadcaster Radio 24.

Such an experiment of dialogue and engagement is a “first” for Europe with such a wide scope and outreach, and the presence of ORT Israel (as previous coordinator of Nanoyou) and EUN (European School Network) guarantees that students are also directly involved in publishing their output in the online editions of these media.

Without this array of mainstream media, the outreach and people’s response would have necessarily been more limited. The EC call was open and Nanochannels’ proposal was judged the best by independent evaluators, according to the usual procedure.

Interesting, but in that case wouldn’t it have been far more efficient for the European Commission to simply contact some media outlets itself to tell the world what it is doing?
